What Do Seventh-day Adventists Believe?
A clear, accessible overview of the core beliefs that define Seventh-day Adventist faith — from the Sabbath to the state of the dead.
The Foundation
Seventh-day Adventists are a Protestant Christian denomination with around 22 million members worldwide. We hold the Bible as the authoritative guide to all doctrine and practice. While we share many core Christian beliefs — the Trinity, salvation by grace through faith, the life and resurrection of Jesus Christ — a few distinctive beliefs set us apart.
The Sabbath
The most visible distinction is our observance of the seventh-day Sabbath (Saturday). We believe God established the Sabbath at creation (Genesis 2:2-3) and that it was never changed in Scripture. The Sabbath begins at sundown Friday and ends at sundown Saturday.
For Adventists, the Sabbath isn’t primarily about rules — it’s a weekly gift. A 24-hour pause built into the rhythm of life. Time for worship, family, nature, and rest.
The State of the Dead
Adventists believe that death is a state of unconscious sleep, not an immediate transition to heaven or hell (Ecclesiastes 9:5; John 11:11-14). The resurrection at Christ’s return is the great hope — not a soul floating to paradise upon death.
This belief shapes how we grieve, how we think about eternity, and why the Second Coming of Jesus feels so urgent and personal.
Health and Wholeness
The body is a temple (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Most Adventists abstain from pork and shellfish (following Leviticus 11), and many are vegetarian or plant-based. Adventist communities regularly appear in longevity research — the Loma Linda, California community is one of the world’s five “Blue Zones.”
Salvation
We believe in salvation by grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ — not by works. Our health practices and Sabbath observance flow from gratitude, not from earning favor with God.
The Investigative Judgment
One of our more unique beliefs is the “investigative judgment” — a pre-Advent judgment that began in 1844 when Christ entered the Most Holy Place of the heavenly sanctuary. This is tied to Daniel 8:14 and is the theological foundation for our sense of urgency about the times we live in. This connects to the broader Great Controversy theme and our understanding of prophecy.
