How to Pray: A Simple Guide for Getting Started

Prayer doesn't have to be formal or complicated. Here's a practical, encouraging guide to building a real prayer life — wherever you are spiritually.

How to Pray: A Simple Guide for Getting Started

Prayer Is a Conversation

Many people feel like they’re “doing it wrong” when they pray. They worry about the right words, the right posture, the right length. The good news: prayer is simply talking with God. There’s no script required.

Jesus modeled this in Matthew 6:9-13 — the Lord’s Prayer isn’t meant to be recited robotically, but to show us the shape of a healthy prayer life: worship, surrender, asking, forgiveness, and trust.

A Simple Structure to Start

If you don’t know where to begin, try this four-part framework:

1. Praise — Start by acknowledging who God is. Not because He needs it, but because it re-orients your heart. “God, you are good. You are faithful. You created everything I see.”

2. Gratitude — Name specific things you’re thankful for today. Specificity matters. “Thank you for the conversation I had with my sister. Thank you that I woke up this morning.”

3. Intercession — Pray for others. A prayer wall, like the one on this site, can help you hold others’ needs before God throughout your day.

4. Personal needs — Bring your own requests. God invites it. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

How Long Should You Pray?

As long as it’s genuine. Five focused minutes beats thirty distracted ones. Start small and let it grow naturally.

When You Don’t Know What to Say

Sometimes words fail. That’s okay. Romans 8:26 promises that the Holy Spirit “intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” Sit in silence. Read a Psalm aloud. Just show up.

Prayer and the Sabbath

Adventists find that the rhythm of the weekly Sabbath creates natural space for deeper prayer. For a deeper look at how prayer and meditation relate, see our guide on prayer and meditation. When the noise of the week pauses, it’s easier to hear — and to speak.
